The Secret to the Perfect Smoothie Bowl

Keeping up with the latest trends (acai bowls, avocado toast, tumeric shots, etc.) can be exhausting and is really tricky to make it look cute and photogenic. This is where the balance between flavor and food styling comes into play - in this post I will be sharing some tips on how to make your smoothie bowls look AND taste amazing!

Texture: for a really great smoothie bowl, you want a texture between ice cream and a drink. It needs to be thick enough that you can place a blueberry on top without it getting sucked into the smoothie, but not so thick that the ingredients can’t mix together. I usually try to start with just a little bit of liquid and all of my fruits are frozen. Then as soon as I get the really thick creamy texture, I will add splashes of milk until the consistency is perfect!

Taste: I tend to use very ripe frozen bananas to bring together every smoothie I create and give it that soft and fluffy flavor. This also gives the smoothie bowl a nice sweet base to start with. Here are some of my favorite smoothie combos:

  • Raspberry + Banana + Dates (for added sweetness!)

  • Almond Butter + Blueberries + Honey + Strawberries (tastes like a PB&J!)

  • Peanut Butter + Oreos + Cocoa powder (basically dessert)

  • Mango + Kiwi + Pineapple + Passion Fruit (to keep it fresh and healthy!)

Toppings: Toppings are what makes the smoothie bowl look pretty and appealing, but you also have to keep in mind the two previous topics of texture and taste as well. One thing I love to use on all of my fruit smoothies is to top one half with coconut yogurt (shown below). This gives the smoothie even more creaminess and can help thicken up a slightly icy smoothie. It also creates this beautiful design of a 50/50 split! You can hide the uneven line between the yogurt and the smoothie by using things like chia seeds, shredded coconut, granola, pomegranate seeds or even fruit slices. Lastly, I love to create some sort of contrast by putting a majority of toppings on one side of the bowl so you can still tell that there is a delicious smoothie hiding underneath! You can cover your smoothies in honey, chocolate syrup, agave, or even jam.

Now you have some easy tricks to create your very own smoothie bowl masterpiece! Send me pictures of the ones you are able to create!
