Una Revolución Vegana

I am so excited to tell y’all about my favorite coffee + juice cafe in San Antonio, TX - Revolucion! It is a bright and wonderful restaurant with 3 different locations - Broadway St., Downtown SATX and one in Houston, TX. I even heard there might be one popping up in The Rim this fall in San Antonio!

Their coffee, tea and juice is amazing (obviously) but what’s really special about this place is that they have also released some new and exciting dishes that are Vegan/Vegetarian friendly AND delicious! The owners Angie and Manny have put together a fantastic menu including burritos, esquite, salads, a homemade vegan burger and even a vegan poke bowl! I’ve got some details for you guys below but make sure to check them out here.

I was so incredibly impressed with this vegan burger because it’s one of the first ones I’ve had in Texas that was a homemade patty and not the Impossible or Beyond brands. Let me tell you - my dad is a major meat-eater and he would devour this! Even the bun is vegan! The flavor is so original with the homemade pickles, local tomatoes, onions and the homemade tangy sauce. I loved the addition of the vegan cheese as well to bring the flavor all together - next time I plan to try it with avocado and spinach added to the plate!

What all of us San Antonians love - burritos! This one in particular is one of my favorites in the city because not only is there the vegan option of tofu chorizo and soy cheese (gmo free), but you can also go with a turkey chorizo or monterrey jack cheese if you’re not totally plant-based. It comes in their signature spinach flour tortillas that are perfectly crispy on the outside and filled with onions, cabbage, cilantro lime rice and a wonderful homemade creamy pepper sauce (still vegan!) - I recommend asking for a side of their avocado lime sauce with this for a little extra zing!

No San Antonio menu would be complete without a few taco options of course! These 3 colorful creations below are all 100% vegan and are available until 2pm every day. The Lentil Walnut Taco (top left) has a great fulfilling texture if you’re looking for something closely resembling meat. Their really fun Street Taco (right) is served with a perfect house-made blue corn tortilla, jackfruit pibil (marinated with guajillo), cabbage and radishes. For something a bit on the lighter side, I recommend the Papas Rancheras Taco (bottom left). It has the spinach tortilla as well as some seasoned and roasted potatoes, salsa ranchera sauce and some cashew crema. You can also try some of their classic breakfast tacos with several vegetarian options (my personal favorite is a potato and egg with avocado lime sauce!)

One of the things that got me really excited about Revolucion in the first place is the background of their owners Angie and Manny. Neither of them had prior experience in culinary arts but were freelancers who often worked from local coffee shops (like myself!) - They saw how many local coffee places only had unhealthy food options of pastries and cookies, and they decided to change that! So they opened the very 1st juice shop in San Antonio and have grown into a thriving local business. It’s always so inspiring to see people like myself putting their dreams of running a restaurant into reality!

Even before going vegetarian, I had never had esquite before - but this is definitely becoming a new staple to my diet! I was blown away by the flavor of the tofu chorizo and the way it mixed with the street corn, cilantro lime rice and especially the pickled onions. They topped it with a vegan mayo and sour cream, green onion, sumac and lime for the perfect tanginess, creaminess and texture! This was probably my favorite meal of the week and I can’t wait to eat this again!

One of the most interesting menu items was the Vegan Poke Bowl! I have to say this is the first time I’ve seen a poke bowl even offered as a vegan option so I was pretty excited! This dish features watermelon as the vegan “tuna” - it’s sauteed in a gluten free tamari and paired with creamy avocado, edamame, rice, crunchy cucumber, green onion, spicy mayo (contains cashews!) and sesame seeds. I was so inspired to see this vegan fish option in one of my favorite restaurants because I think fish is one of the hardest things to recreate and Revolucion did a fantastic job!

Last but certainly not least, this amazing Vegetarian Power Bowl Salad! It has a lovely light homemade vinaigrette, sheep’s milk cheese, heirloom tomatoes, avocado, farro and a poached local organic cage free egg - all on top of some fresh and crispy spinach. I think this is a great way to elevate a salad from appetizer to a meal, and it’s packed with 25 grams of protein! You can also add some of their turkey chorizo or even bacon if you’d like to pack some more protein in there.

All in all, Revolucion continues to be one of my favorite places in San Antonio as a vegetarian and I can’t wait to come back again and eat these amazing meals! Go check them out and let me know which meal you love the most!
